A result you can put to use.

Choose a measurement type, enter a value, and select the starting and destination units. The result updates as you type. Swap reverses the units and uses the displayed result as the new input. The popular buttons load a worked starting point that you can change.

Length, weight, volume, area, and speed use a ratio between units. Temperature also needs an offset: 20 °C is 68 °F, but a rise of 20 °C is a rise of 36 °F. This tool converts temperature readings, not temperature differences.

Kitchen measurements

Volume units marked US mean US customary liquid measures. A US cup is about 236.6 mL; a 250 mL metric cup and a UK imperial pint are different measures. Ounces measure mass, while fluid ounces measure volume. You cannot convert a cup of flour to grams without knowing the ingredient and how it was measured.

Avoid cup and ounce mix-ups →

Rooms, shelves, and distances

Enter decimal values: 5 feet 6 inches is 5.5 feet, not 5.6 feet. For flooring, multiply length by width in the same unit, then convert the area. A square-foot conversion uses the length factor twice.

Precision that makes sense

Extra digits do not make your original measurement more accurate. A rough tape-measure reading still has the same uncertainty after conversion. Keep intermediate digits, then round the final result to a useful level for your task.

What the converter supports

Use Length for millimeters through miles; Weight for grams, kilograms, everyday ounces, pounds, and stone; Volume for liters and US liquid measures; Temperature for Celsius, Fahrenheit, and kelvin; Area for square units, acres, and hectares; and Speed for km/h, mph, m/s, and knots. Weight uses ordinary avoirdupois units, not troy ounces. The converter does not estimate ingredient density, fuel economy, clothing sizes, or construction waste.
